Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The war diary indicates that William was wounded on 3 Sep 1916 during the failed attack on Falfemont Farm from their positions in Angle.  The battalion went "over the top" of the trenches and were immediately hit by very heavy machine gun fire which caused huge casualties and forced the battalion to retire to the starting position. William was taken the either the No 5 or No 21 Casualty Clearing Station at Le Neuville where he died on the 7th September. The battalion suffered 231 casualties during the brief attack.
