Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as being killed in action on 29th April 1916. The very brief 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 27th to 30th April are transcribed below and show that Charles was the only casualty on the 29th in trenches at Morlancourt.

  • 27.4.1916: C&D Coy in trenches. Right half Bn in Billetts. Casualties 10 O Rank Wounded
  • 28.4.1916: Same as previous day. 2nd Lt Smart left for England
  • 29.4.1916: Same of previous day. Casualties Killed 1 O Rank
  • 30.4.1916: Same as previous day Casualties Killed 2 O Ranks, Wounded 25 O. Ranks. END
