Circumstances of Death

Clarence is listed as being killed in action on 19th October 1917 by a shell burst. The 274th Siege Battery war diary entries for the period 18th to 20th October are transcribed below.

Near Ypres - 18 Oct 1917: Battery shelled intermittently all day. One other rank accidentally injured.

Near Ypres - 19 Oct 1917: Captain F. C. C. Clark went out as FOO [Forward Observation Officer] to shoot on trench. Unable to do so owing to bad visibility. Battery area heavily shelled. 2nd Lt C J Lovell killed near B burst?. One other rank wounded.

Carried out wire cutting programme.

2nd Lt Wm Baker joined for duty from base.

Near Ypres - 20 Oct 1917: 2nd Lt Lovell buried at Prison Cemetery [later Ypres Reservoir Cemetery].

Battery carried out wire cutting shoots.
