Circumstances of Death

Henry is listed as being killed in action on 19th June 1915 when he was hit by a stray bullet (see below). The 1st/7th Battalion war diary entries for the period 18th to 20th are transcribed below.

Ploegsteert Trenches: 18.6.1915: Cooler today, an E wind blowing. Enemy quiet, same for sniping and rifle grenades. Casualties one – L/Cpl Hughes killed. Buried in Ploegsteert Wood. Trenches visited by Brigadier General Staff. Capt Hanson, Lt Field to here? & 7 NCO’s and men.

Ploegsteert Trenches: 19.6.1915: Trenches shelled today. No casualties from shelling. Pte Marchant killed in supporting point by stray bullet.

Battalion relieved in the trenches by 1/8th Battalion. Relief completed 6pm. Bn to Brigade Reserve less 2 Coys detailed as local reserve to Bn holding R & C subsector & L subsector of Bde sector. Capt Payton rejoined from his ? with 4th Bn Rifle Brigade. Bn HQ at Hants Farm.

Brigade Reserve – Hants Farm - 20.6.1915: Dispositions as above, a little shelling, a very hot day. Capt Grey to hospital.
