Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The war diary states that the day before Arnold was killed, 16th March 1917, the battalion moved into the front trenches in the Morval sector and in particular the Aire and Brunswick trenches. The following day is described as "extraordinarily quiet" except for an enemy sniper who was firing from the area of Bosnia Trench. It appears that Arnold was part of a patrol sent out to flank the enemy sniper and infantry in the Bosnia trench when they were hit by an artillery shell killing two men, one of whom would have been Arnold.
