  • On enlistment Basil gave his age as 19 years born in 1896. However his birth certificate reveals that he was only 17 yrs and born in 1898 and was therefore too
    young to enlist at that age.

Military Service History

  • 29 Sep 1915 - Enlisted in Royal Engineers aged 17
  • 30 Sep 1915 - Promoted to L/Corporal
  • 27 Dec 1917 - Promoted to Corporal
  • 13 Jul 1918 - Commissioned as 2nd Lt in Royal Air Force (Gazette)
  • 29 Jul 1918 - Attached to 4 Squadron

NB: I cannot find any record of Basil's promotion to Lieutenant in any of his service records or Gazette entries, however his CWGC burial record lists him as a Temp/Lt 

Circumstances of Death

On 28th September 1918 Basil was the observer in an RAF R.E.8 or Bristol Fighter aeroplane serial number C1036 flown by Lt RH Schroeder when he was "shot through" whilst on a counter attack patrol somewhere between Passchendaele and Roulers. Source

Basil had survived a previous crash on 6th September 1918 when a plane being flown by 2nd Lt F Sinclair crashed due to a heavy thunderstorm whilst on a "recce".
