Circumstances of Death

Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 1st December 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai. The 1st/8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 29th November to 2nd December are transcribed below and they show that Arthur was killed on the 30th November or very early on the 1st December.

Hamel - 29 Nov 1917: Battalion training. Battalion advised to be ready to move at half an hours warning. 

Casualties Nil

Hamel - 30 Nov 1917: 8.10am: Battalion ordered to move to defensive line W of St. Emelie.

11.45am: Battalion ordered from St. Emelie to a position ¼ mile S.W. of Epehy in support of 166 Brigade

1.30am [1 Dec]: Battalion received orders to from Epehy to Peiziere where it took up a position in the line NNE of the village.

Casualties 2 killed and 6 wounded

Trenches near Epehy - 1 Dec 1917: Battalion in trenches NE of Epehy

Trenches near Epehy - 2 Dec 1917: 2am: Bn relieved by 1st East Yorks and 15 D.L.I and moved back to billets in Villers-Faucon.

10am: Bn relieved by 8th Queens R.W. Surrey Regt in defense of Lempire and was attached to 165th Brigade.
