Harold is listed as being killed in action on 20 Jul 1917. The 6th Battalion war diary entries for the period 19th to 21st July are transcribed below. Gravelle Switch - 19 Jul 1917: Sunken Road again shelled. Relieved 10th W Yorkshire Regt in right Battn sector leaving HQ at 10am. B, C & D Coys in front line and support with A Coy in reserve. Chemical Works – 20 Jul 1917: Good relief, completed at 1.50am. Delayed somewhat by shelling on left of Croft. Quiet day. Trenches worked on and improved. Special attention paid to trench discipline. Usual patrols at night. Casualties during day 2 killed and 3 wounded. Chemical Works – 21 Jul 1917: Early morning shelling but quiet for remainder of the day. Reinforced by 80 O.R’s from Brigade depot at night. Casualties during day 3 killed and 4 wounded. |
