James is listed as dying of wounds on 6th March 1917 and was buried at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte. The cemetery was used for burials by both the 34th and 2/2 London Casualty Clearing Stations. The 1st Battalion war diary indicates that James was wounded on the 4th March as it is only day with recorded casualties in early March. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 3rd to 7th March 1917 are transcribed below. Maurepas - 2 Mar 1917: Foot baths again allotted to all Company's during the morning. At 5.45pm marched up to relieve 2nd Bn Irish Guards in the Fregicourt sector of the line. Relief complete 9pm. Fregicourt Trenches – 3 Mar 1917: The Bn slipped to the left and took over on Company front from the 29th Division with No 2 Coy. The new line posts were in a very bad condition indeed & needed much improvement. Snipers very active. Fregicourt Trenches – 4 Mar 1917: The 8th Division on the right of the Brigade frontage successfully attacked Fritz Trench at 5.15am. The result was that our position was heavily shelled all the morning. Canary trench in which No 2 Coy had a platoon suffered most, having 2/Lt G H Smith wounded, 7 O.R. killed, 3 O.R died of wounds and 8 O.R. wounded. Fregicourt Trenches – 5 Mar 1917: A great deal of work done on new lines posts & supporting posts sited and begun. Bright moonlit night & enemy sniping very active. Fregicourt Trenches – 6 Mar 1917: Relieved about 7pm by 2nd Battalion Irish Guards & the 3 Coys & HQ went back to Priez Farm. No 2 Coy went to Y Camp at Maurepas. Priez Farm – 7 Mar 1917: About 70 men required for fatigues. Remainder resting. |
