Distinguished Conduct Medal Citation

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty whilst acting as Quartermaster to his platoon he carried food and water, over the open under heavy fire, to his men,
and when his Officer and Platoon Sergeant were killed he took charge and held on to an important tactical position until relieved, showing the greatest gallantry
thoughout".

Circumstances of Death

William suffered his third and most serious wounds to his right leg and left thigh on 22nd August 1918 during the Allied push to end the war. He was eventually transferred to the Military Hospital in Stratford where, despite having his leg amputated, he died from septicaemia caused by the gun shot wounds. He has previoulsy been treated at the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station, 12th USA Hospital at Rouen and HMHS Carisbrook Castle.
