Albert is listed as being killed in action on 4 Jul 1916. A newspaper report states that he was killed by a gunshot while tending to a fellow wounded officer who also died during the Battle of Albert at Mametz Wood. The war diary for the period 3rd to 5th July is transcribed below: Mametz Wood - 3.7.16: 2 Coys moved to Danzig Alley & 2 Coys remained in Danzig Trench. Mametz Wood - 4.7.16: The Battlalion came under the orders of the Brigadier 91st Brigade and took up position along White Trench & North of Bottom Wood (All covering whole Divisions front). Mametz Wood - 5.7.16: Relieved at night [4th/5th July] by the 15th Bn R Welsh Fus. Total Casualties during this period [1st to 5th] July: Killed - Officers Lt A Hodgkinson; E.J. Martin; M. N. Haseler; 2/Lieut A.J. Vardy. Wounded 2/Lieut's J J Chepmell and A J Adams. Killed - Other Ranks 3 - wounded 98. Missing 14. END |
