Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 27 Aug 1917. The 7th Battalion war diary entries for the 20th to 22nd September are transcribed below along with a section of a Report on Operations.

St. Emilie Line: 20-9-18: D Coy patrolled forward to Zebra Post and Brayton Post. Forward Coys relieved in evening by troops of 12th Division and 53rd Brigade M.G.C. and withdrew to Ronssoy and Lempire.

St. Emilie Line: 21-9-18: D Coy plue R.E. platoon successfully attacked at 5am and consolidated on a line about 300 yards North of Sart Far. Patrol unsuccessfully attempted to take Egg Post

St. Emilie Line: 22-9-18: B & C Coys occupied Sart Farm without molestation by enemy in daylight. Patrols to make good Egg Post and SE half of Grafton Trench met with very strong opposition and did not make their objectives, although a Patrol under 2nd Lt A.F. Neill made three separate very determined attacks on Egg Post during the night. Bn relieved by 8th R.Berks Rgt in Sart Farm.

Narrative of Operations from 17th Sept to 24th Sept 1918

21-9-18: At 5.0am D Coy were on their jumping off line and barrage opened at 5.40am. D Coy reached their objective successfully and consolidated on a line about 300 yards north of Sart Farm

A  patrol was sent forward to take Egg Post but were unable to take it.

10th Essex Rgt. were fired at from behind, probably from Horse Post, they suffered heavily and were unable to reach their objectives. Some fell back to Sart Farm.

D Coy were in touch with Northants Regt at Doleful Post.

Patrols were sent up Pomponius Lane and Fleeceall Lane, they were fired on from Egg Post and had to withdraw.

A supply of Bombs and S.A.A. was got up to Sart Farm during the afternoon.

About 9pm orders were received that one Coy 7th R.W.Kent were to be lent to 8th R. Berks Reg for support in an attack to be carried out at 12.15am 22nd. Owing to the loss of Doleful Post during the night this attack did not develop and A Coy returned to the Battn early on the 22nd.
