Alfred is listed as dying of wounds on 26th April 1917 in the 2nd Southern General Hospital, in Bristol. A report in the Kenilworth Advertiser on 5 May 1917 states that Alfred had spent four months in hospital with a serious leg wound but despite all efforts to save his leg he had died during surgery to amputate it. Army records show that Alfred was one of four 6th Battalion men admitted to the 34th Casualty Clearing Station at Grovetown, Somme with a wound to to his left thigh on 4 Jan 1917. He was evacuated to Hospital via the 5th Ambulance Train on 7 Jan 1917. The 6th Battalion war diary entry for the 3rd, 4th 5th Jan 1917 are transcribed below. Bouleaux Wood - 3rd January 1917: Enemy very quiet, 3 men wounded Bouleaux Wood - 4th January 1917: Enemy shelled front line heaving during the afternoon. Casualties 7 other ranks wounded. Relieved at night by the XI Battalion Rifle Brigade, the Battalion went back to Bronfay Camp by the Mercantille Railway arriving at the Plateau Railhead at about 2am on 5th. Bouleaux Wood - 5th January 1917: Battalion cleaning up and resting. Rifle inspections in afternoon. |
