Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

John was wounded in action on 3rd September 1917 at Pilckem Ridge and he died two days later at the 61st Casualty Clearing Station at Krombeke, Poperinghe. The very brief 282nd Brigade war diary for the 3rd September is transcribed below.
