Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The Battalion Diary records that the trenches preparatory to an advance were so crowded with Canadian Highlanders that newcomers had to lie out in the open under shell-fire. Charles was one of a large number of men who, as a result of the overcrowding, died on the open ground. His body was never found. This took place during the Battle for St. Julien and although the battalion managed to hold a line NE of Wieltje the battalion suffered very heavy losses during the attempt to capture St. Julien and the actual capture of Hill 60 and by the next day could only muster 250 men.
