Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Arthur is listed as being killed on 26 Oct 1917 and on that day the battalion attacked enemy lines near Bedford House towards Reutelbeek. The war diary tells us that attack was conducted in "indescribable conditions" with men sinking waist deep in mud and water. Initially the battalion achieved its objectives and were then able to repulse a counter attack however they were forced to withdraw after a second counter attack and an intense artillery barrage. Arthur was killed during these actions which were in support of the 15th Battalion Royal Warwickshire.

A later report on the days actions states that at 12.10am the Officer in Charge of D company, of which Arthur was a part, reported that he was under attack and was digging in 400 yards north of the Menin Road and that he had taken several casualties, presumably Arthur was one of them.
