Circumstances of Death

Timothy was killed in action on 27 Oct 1914. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the 26th & 27th October are transcribed below. The entry for the 27th seems to end prematurely and there are no further entries until the 10th November. Some records give Timothy's date of death as being between 20th Oct and 7th November and the 27th is the date used by the CWGC. The 20th was the first day of the First Battle of Ypres when the German army attacked British forces in the area.
Klein Zillebeke - 27 October 1914: Stand to arms 4.0am and advance along the Menin – Beccacare Road and occupied trenches about two miles down. Vacated trenches at 1pm and advanced in the direction of [blank space]. One English aeroplane was brought down by our own gunners and immediately came under heavy shell fire. Retired about half a mile but immediately advanced again in the direction of where Bn entrenched in the open. Retired to Klein Zillebeke about 9.30pm where Bn bivouacked for the night. Klein Zillebeke - 28 October 1914: Left Klein Zillebeke about 5am advanced about 5/600 yards where we entered a wood in company with remainder of Brigade. Came in touch with enemy in front of wood. NB. The diary ends there and there are no more entries until 10 November 1918 |
