Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

We are grateful to Danielle and the Royal Engineers Museum for supplying copies of the war diary for Archibald's unit and the entries for the period 11th to the 13th are transcribed, in full, below. He is listed as being killed in action on 12 Oct 1917 and the diary reveals that his unit were at Cassell on working parties.

Cassell, France, October 11th 1917: One section of No.2 Sig.Con.Co finished work for II Anzac.

Sgt. Ainsworths's party to Limbres to put in order routes blown about by the gale.

Cassell, France, October 12th 1917: Zero hour 5.50 a.m. Parties the same as the 11th. No.33M.A.L. finished at Brandhoek and party at BAC returned to camp.

Cable connection to APC Office got loose from house attachment and fell on one of the stays of the tramway. This was charged and burned out the phone at our end and the two transformers on the XK lines this? phantom circuit was at the time through to the A.P.C. Only one drop damaged on the switchboard though a fire was started.

Cassell, France, October 13th 1917: No.2.Sig.Con.Co with 1st Anzacs dismantling certain routes and making division [diversion?] round Busselboom Camp. END
