Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

John is listed as having died on 12 Mar 1917. A note right at the end of his service record reveals that he drowned (accidentally) on that day. The war diary does not assisted because there is no entry for the 12th March. On the 10th & 11th the battalion were taking part in a practise attack in trenches near Frise. The day after he died the battalion relieved the 1/8th Royal Warwickshire in the trenches at Biaches.

Frise is on a large bend in the Somme River and surrounded by water and Biaches is also next to the west bank of the River Somme.
