Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Fred is listed as dying of wounds (having been gassed at Fonquevillers) aboard No 34 Ambulance Train somewhere between 29th CCS at Gézaincourt (see below) and Rouen. His service record shows that he was initially taken to the 48th Field Ambulance on 11 May 1918 then to the 29th Casualty Clearing Station before being put on the Ambulance Train for transport to one of the Military Hospitals in Rouen.

The war diary for the period 9th to 13th May 1918 is transcribed below with, we believe, the relevant events taking place on the 11th.

9th May - Fonquevillers: A Coy clearing outr Prussian Avenu which had been shelled during night of 7/8 [May]. General maintenance work. B Coy repairing Bienvillers Road, wiring Biez Wood south side. D Coy extending Keane Trench L.1.d.85.55 - L.1.d.40.40. Also work on Rettemoy Avenue F.25.d wiring and revetting in trench.

10th May - Fonquevillers: Same as yesterday.

11th May - Fonquevillers: Work as usual. The enemy began to shell Fonquevillers about 5pm. For quite a time it was not known that they were gas shells. About 2000 gas shells were poured into Fonquevillers and shelling ceased about midnight. During this time great difficultly was experienced in wearing the Box Respirator.

12th May - Fonquevillers: Work as usual

11th May - Fonquevillers: A Coy work in Prussian Avenue, B Coy on road work, D Coy on Rettemoy Road. END
