  • Arthur enlisted in September 1915 aged only 16 yrs and 10 months. He was 18 when he was killed

Circumstances of Death

Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 18th August 1917. The 12th Battlion war diary entries for the period 17th to 19th August are transcribed below and indicate that Arthur was killed late on the 17th or very early on the 18th.

Zillebeke – 17.8.17: Moved into the Black Line and relieved the 2nd Bn Scottish Rifles. The line held being along the Road from the Railway Bank exclusive in D.25.d.65.05 – J.1.b.95.45. Relief complete soon after midnight. Weather very good.

Casualties: Killed 13 Other Ranks and wounded 37 Other Ranks.

Zillebeke – 18.8.17: Relieved at night by the 17th Bn London Regt, 47 Division relief complete 2am [18th]. Returned to Cavalry Barracks, Ypres

Ypres – 19.8.17: At 6pm moved to Halifax Camp. Casualties wounded 2 OR’s
