Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were in dug outs south of Athies when they were sent to the assembly point for an attack on Fampoux. The attack captured about 400 yards of ground until it was stopped by German machine gun fire. The battalion consolidated the gain and William was killed during the action.
