Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The war diary states that on 10th April the battalion formed to the west of Orange Hill in prepartion for supporting an attack the following day by 37th Div on Monchy-le-Preux. The battalion were to sieze and then hold a line between Boiry-Notre-Dame and the River Scarpe to the west of Pelves. The attack went well all objectives were taken and some the battalion found themselves surplus to requirements and they retired back to the positions at Orange Hill. After seizing the objectives the battalion came under heavy shell fire and, according to newspaper reports, James was killed during the shelling.![]() |
