114th Heavy Battery became part of 68th Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery on 1 Feb 1918
Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
68th Brigade took part in the Battle of the Selle between 17th & 25th October 1918 and Ernest died of wounds on the 29th.The war diary shows that the Brigade had been ordered to scout positions for the defense of the River Selle and on the 14th Oct they moved out from the Busigny area into positions at Escaufort. Other units in the Brigade were subject of high explosive and gas shelling on the 14th and our best guess is that this is when Ernest was wounded as he was transferred some 117km from the front to the 8th Stationary Hospital in Wimereux which was on the coast near Bolougne where he died. Casualty figures for the month of October can been seen below so as to make your own decision. Details of the Battle of the Selle can be found above.
