Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Severely wounded in action near Kruisecke on 26th October 1914

Between the 19th October and 22nd November 1914, the 7th Divsion took part in the First Battle of Ypres where the Division fought the advancing Germans to a standstill and as a result all units suffered heavy losses. It was here that British rifle fire wreaked havoc against repeated German mass infantry attack, preventing an enemy breakthrough. After the battle the Division was known as the 'Immortal Seventh.'

On 18th October William reached the firing line and took part in the battle. William was severely wounded at Kruisecke on the evening of the 25th October and died in the Herbert Hospital, Woolwich on 1st November 1914, age 32.
