Circumstances Leading to Death From War Diary

Trenches East of Valquerie 2 Dec 1917

6.00am enemy made an attack on one of our saps (part of Hindenburg Line) with a large party. He drove us back twice but local counter attacks re-captured the ground. About 6.30am the enemy attacked again with a larger party and gained and held the sap owing to our own supply of bombs having run out.

About 2pm, after a heavy barrage, the enemy attacked with a large forces across a wide front bombing down trenches and attacking across the open. We were forced to retire about 300 yards. Counter attacks were made to drive the enemy back without success. Battn HQ was captured during the attack the Commanding Officer being hit near B.H.Q & believed to have been taken prisoner. At night several attacks were made on our new positioners but all were repulsed.

Frank was killed during these attacks and counter attacks.
