Circumstances of Death
|
William is listed as being killed in action on 5 Nov 1914. The 1st Battalion war diary has a note that states "Oct 26 to November 15th Diary Lost" and so we cannot transcribe it. However the book "The Northamptonshire Regiment 1914-1918" by the Regimental History Committee states: "Just before dawn on November 4th, the enemy, after a particularly heavy bombardment, again attempted to carry the trenches by assault, but once more they were beaten back by the rifle fire of the defenders. During the night of November 4th the battalion was relieved by the Royal Sussex and went back into close support. There was no respite from the continual shelling however, indeed the support line suffered almost more than the advanced positions. Seven men lost their lives from hostile shelling on November 5, among them Company Sergeant-Major Good, who had done excellent work ever since the beginning of the war". From tha above we have concluded that William was one of the seven men killed by shellfire on 5 Nov 1914. |
