For reasons that are unknown John seems to have lived with his maternal grandparents in 1891 and is not found in either his parents or grandparents Census returns in 1901 when he would have been c16 yrs olds.
His parents lived in Whitchurch from 1891 through to at least 1915. His grandparents lived in Clifford Chambers and he is named on the War Memorial there.
In 1901 John was living in Cirencester as a boarder using the name John James of Farmcote. Farmcote is nextdoor to his birthplace of Hailes.
