Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)     

On the 22nd January 1916 the battalion relieved the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment in the trenches in the Bray area.
On the 23rd the war diary reports casualties of 3 other ranks killed, presumably from shell fire. No other details are given.

For reasons that are unknown John seems to have lived with his maternal grandparents in 1891 and is not found in either his parents or grandparents Census returns in 1901 when he would have been c16 yrs olds.
His parents lived in Whitchurch from 1891 through to at least 1915. His grandparents lived in Clifford Chambers and he is named on the War Memorial there.
 
In 1901 John was living in Cirencester as a boarder using the name John James of Farmcote. Farmcote is nextdoor to his birthplace of Hailes.
