Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the day he was killed the battalion were in the field in the Albert area when they were ordered to attack enemy lines at Hazy and Boriska Trenches located directly east of Lesboeufs. The battalion formed up in "25" and Oxford Trenches and at 3.30pm launched the attack which was almost immediately brought to an end by heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Ernest was one of 80 casualties incurred during the failed attack.
