Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On 1 Jul 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme also known as the Battle of Albert, the 10th Battalion were in reserve at Millencourt. The following day the battalion took over as the 57th Brigade Reserve in front line positions at Keats Redan and Argyle Street in preparation for an attack on the 3 Jul 1916. The lines were heavily shelled by the enemy and 5 men were killed, 31 wounded, 9 were missing and 3 had shell shock.

On 3 Jul 1916 the battalion supported attacks in the area of La Boisselle village (The Capture of La Boisselle). The attack was succesful and the battalion consolidated their line to the left of La Boisselle village. They suffered 27 casualties.

It is not known on which day Arthur was wounded and if, as reported, he died of his wounds he would have been buried nearby however his body has not been found and he either died on the battlefield or he was buried in a grave that was later destroyed. Unfortunately his Register of Effects and Pension card state only that he died of wounds and do not give a location or field hospital.

La Boisselle is about 8km east of Millencourt with the town Albert more or less in the middle of them. I have included both trench maps below. A number of South Warwicks men died at La Boisselle during the war.
