Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion was on the front line directly north of Messines and in positions and trying to hold a line from Onraet Wood to their north and Earl & Lumm Farms to their south. They came under very heavy shell fire and the enemy was sending out patrols. It appears that Herbert was killed by shell fire.
