  • CWGC records show that James was originally buried at Map Ref 45A.G.12.c.25.75 with two other Guardsmen. It is believed that the 45A part is a mistake and
    should be 36c and map reference 36c.G.12.c.25.75 places his grave just to the north of the road D39 just west of Hulluch and east of Vermelles.

Circumstances of Death

James is listed as being killed in action on 9th October 1915 and the brief 1st Battalion war diary entries for the 8th, 9th & 10th October are transcribed below.

Trenches – Vermelles – 8th Oct: Attack by enemy on the 3/Grenadiers on the right of our Brigade front during the course of the afternoon, situation saved in a gallant manner by 3rd & 2nd Bn Coldstream. A good deal of heavy shelling and about 30 casualties. Recesses dug for gas cylinders, many fall in from shell fire.

Trenches – Vermelles – 9th Oct: Quiet day, repair damage done by yesterdays shelling. Gas cylinders put in position during night.

Trenches – Vermelles – 10th Oct: Quiet day, relieved by Queens late & go to billets in Sailly Labourse leaving a party behind to fit 180 more cylinders. Part of the Brigade still in the trenches.
