Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
|
Sidney [Sydney] is listed in his Register of Effects as dying of his wounds on 17 May 1915 in No 5 Field Ambulance. As he died in a Field Ambulance rather that a Casualty Clearing Station or Military Hospital it is assumed he died on the same day he was wounded and in fact his pension card contradicts the Register of Effects and states he was killed in action on 17 May 1915. The war diary for the 16th & 17th May 1915 is transcribed below. 16th May 1915: The Battalion held the captured German trenches all day until relieved about 2 a.m., 17th by S. Staffords. The shelling was very heavy all day, but mostly on our old first line trenches and the Rue du Bois. 17th May 1915: On being relieved by S. Staffs the Battalion moved into the Reserve trenches. Relieved [in the Reserve trenches] by Sirhind Brigade and moved into old billets in Richebourg St. Vaast. Very noisy as 16th Battery was just outside our Headquarters. Casualties [16th & 17th combined] 2 Killed, 23 Wounded, 4 Missing. END |
