Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

According to Red Cross records Cornelius was taken prisoner at Zonnebeke on 22 Oct 1914, just 18 days after he arrived in France, during the First Battle of Ypres. He was then held at the Munster II PoW Camp in Munster, Germany (Red Cross record). He managed to survive there for just over four years before falling victim to Spanish Flu / Pneumonia on 24 Nov 1918.

He is buried at Cologne Southern, however his register of effects state that he died "on a farm in Dreierwalde" but with Dreirwalde being 200km north of Cologne and because he is on a CWGC list of "concentrations" dated 6 Sep 1923 we believe he was originally buried elsewhere before being moved to Cologne.

The battalion war diary for the period 21st to 23rd Oct 1914 is transcribed below:

21st October: Enemy attacked our trenches at Daybreak, 1st day of the Battle of Zonnebeke (Ypres). 1st experience of German High Explosive shell (Black Marias'). A great many casulties. Retired at 1.00am to Railway Crossing SW of Zonnebeke

22nd October: Battn entrenched SW of Railway Crossing. Remained all day. Slight shelling. Left trenches after dark.

23rd October: 3rd day of Battle of Zonnebeke. March out at 5.0am towards Zonnebeke but received orders to retire to our trenches where we remained in reserve for the day. END
