Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were in a support role for operartions near the Menin & Lille Gates at Ypres where the German army was threatening to break through British lines. They eventually took up a static position to hold lines near the Menin Road where they were subject to a artillery bombardment and gas fumes. It is most likely, but not certain, that Claude was killed during the bombardment.
