Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 29 Sep 1914. The 1st Battalion war diary shows that they were in the lines at Troyon and entries for the 28th and 29th are transcribed below.

28.9.14 – Troyon: A quiet morning except for artillery duel. 12 midnight the Germans attacked the French and our trenches were badly shelled. The enemy attacked the K.R. Rifles at 3am both attacks were driven off. The enemy used a good many rockets to light up the lines – up to today we have had killed & 9 wounded [see below] during these two days in the trenches. The 18th Brigade came up during the night on D Company’s right thus connecting up with the French.

29.9.14 – Troyon: A quiet day was spent, artillery duels only. K.R. Rifles relieved our Battalion at 6.45pm in the trenches. We remained in dug-outs. There was a very terrific night attack which seemed to be on the French right. German aeroplanes hovered around – we tried to bring down one with rifle fire. Nothing further to report.

We had 5 killed and 9 wounded during the two days in the trenches [see above – Walter was the only casualty on the 29th]
