Voluntry Aid Detachment

William was a member of the Warwick No 11 - Henley in Arden - Voluntry Aid Detachment (VAD) from at least 1912 until his death in 1917.

In 1914 a Red Cross Hospital opened in Henley and William, fresh from passing his Redd Cross exams was stationed there with the No 11 VAD. The picture below (courtesy of Our Warwickshire) was taken c1917 and shows the nurses, staff and casualties at Henley. To the left, standing in the darker uniform, is a man who fits William's age.

Circumstances of Death

William died in Henley in Arden of Acute Bronchial Cattarah and Heart Failure on 4 Jan 1917. His death certificate is attached here (click to expand)
