George is listed as being killed in action on 23 Oct 1914. The war diary diary for that day is transcribed below. He died in the same action as his older brother Henry. 23rd October 1914 - Le Quesne - 4am: A terrific attack is launched against the front occupied by the Bn, the Germans attacking in the darkness with great courage, the line is however still intact when the attack fails at 6am. Over 200 dead were found in close proximity to the trench including two officer. The wounded must have exceeded this number as the Germans were nonplussed by our wire entanglement. The machine gun on the barrier in the rear played great havoc with a party of the enemy who advanced in fours down the road. During the day the enemy move their trenches to within 50yards of our trenches. 5pm: A furious onslaught is again made on our position which however is still intact at 6pm. We were supported during the day by 2 Companies of the Buffs. Casualties during this day 34 killed and 38 wounded including Lt Col Higgins the Commanding Officer, Maj Payne and two 2/Lt's. |
