Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as being killed in action on 1 Jun 1918. However he was reported as missing on 25 May 1918 and his Register of Effects document records the date of death as being between 26 May 1918 & 1 Jun 1918. The very brief 11th Battalion war diary entries for the period 10th May to 1st June 1918 are transcribed below.

10th to 23rd May 1918 - Mont Sur Courville: The Battalion was billeted in Mont Sur Courvill where training was carried on.

23rd to 26th May 1918 - Concevreux: On the night of the 23rd the Battalion marched via St. Gilles – Fismes – Courlandon to billets in Romain. On the night of the 26th marched to Venteley. Moved to Concevreux.

28th to 31st May 1918 - Concevreux: The Battalion went into action during the enemy attacks on the Aisne and the Marne. On the 27th Lieut Col E. Prior DSO, MC was wounded and the Command of the Battalion was taken over by Capt H.M. Wilkinson MC who was killed on the following day. Major A.W. Robinson then assumed command of the Battalion.

1st to 3rd June 1918 – Loisy en Brie: The Battalion, with the exception of a few officers and men who were in the line with Composite Battalion were billeted at Loisy-en-Brie where it remained until the 8th. Major C.J. Bridges, Worcester Regiment assumed command of the Battalion.
