Charles is listed as being killed in action on 5 Jun 1916. He is mentioned by name in the Brigade casualty list and was the only man killed on that day although 3 others were wounded. The 242nd Brigade war diary entry for the 5th June is transcribed below. Neuve Eglise - 1917 June 5th: Enemys artillery became very active on right front placing very heavy barrage for 20 to 30 minutes on support and front lines.
