Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as being killed in action on 5 Jun 1916. He is mentioned by name in the Brigade casualty list and was the only man killed on that day although 3 others were wounded. The 242nd Brigade war diary entry for the 5th June is transcribed below.

Neuve Eglise - 1917 June 5th: Enemys artillery became very active on right front placing very heavy barrage for 20 to 30 minutes on support and front lines. Increased artillery fighting during the night. END

The other men wounded were Gnr 837262 B. Tainton - Shell Shock; Gnr 760085 R. Lybourn - wounded and A/Bdr 760935 G Kirkup - wounded
