Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

It is not known on which day George was wounded but on the 12th & 13th April the battalion had attacked enemy positions in the area of L'Apinette, Arrewage, Le Cornet Perdu, Les Puresbecques and La Bourre River. There was heavy fighting and it appears that not much progress was made and on the night of the 13th what was left of the battalion consolidated a line in an orchard to the east of Arrewage.Over the two days 161 men were wounded, 31 killed and 268 were missing. The following day the Battalion withdrew to Bourre during which time 13 men were wounded. William died in the 39th Stationary Hospital, Aire sur la Lys. He had arrived in France on 22 Dec 1914.
