Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Frederick is listed as being killed in action on 10 Aug 1917. The War Dairy held by the National Archive does not contain the July, August and September 1917 pages however an ever helpful user at The Great War forum pointed us to the Ogilvy Muster, an archive of records held by various museums, and the war diary for 10 Aug 1917 is transcribed below, however no mention is made of any casualties. Date of death the two CWGC grave registration records give conflicting dates of death with one quoting 9 Aug 1917 and the other 10 Aug 1917 and therefore both dates are transcribed. Chateau des Trois Tours - August 9th: Harrassing fire carried out during 24 hours by B, C & D/59. END Chateau des Trois Tours - August 10th: At 4.35am II Corps attack to capture original Black Line - this brigade cooperated with object of deceiving enemy a feint barrage being put on Brigade Zone. C Battery to rest. A in action again at 12 noon. Harrassing fire carried our during 24 hours. END A brief article in the Leamington Spa Courier on 27 Sep 1917 reads "Sergt. Fred Russell, R.F.A., was killed action on August 10th (instantly)" (Thank you to Michael at the Great War Forum) |
