Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 18 Mar 1918. The Light Bobs website records little activity in March 1918 - "During this month the Battalion had two tours in the front line, with rest intervals at Smol Hill. Early in the month Major G. B. Martin, M.C., assumed the duties of second in command when Major C. Wheeler, D.S.O., went home on leave. On the 22nd and 23rd March a terrific blizzard swept over the camp, blowing down tents and creating general havoc".

The Stoneleigh History Society refer to a war diary extract which stated: "March 18th was "a quiet day" and that there had been persistent light shelling". It is likely that Walter was killed during the shelling.
