Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

John is listed as being killed in action on 10 Oct 1916. The war diary for that day is transcribed below:
 
Gueudecourt: "The Brigade moved up into the line and the Battalion relieved the 7th Royal Sussex in support trenches M31 central?. The Norfolk and Suffolk Regiments taking over the front lines and the Berkshire Regt in reserve. At 8pm relief was complete. Parts of our line were heavily shelled and a few casualties inflicted [including John] but towards morning shelling gradually died down".
