Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as dying from wounds incurred in action on 24 Aug 1918. His service record states that he received a gunshot wound to his right thigh on 24th Aug 1918 and died later the same day at the 55th Casualty Clearing Station at Daours. The 7th Battalion war diary entries for the period 23rd to 25th August are transcribed, in full, below.

Mericourt 23/8/18: Quiet day. Orders received for attack next morning

Mericourt 24/8/18: 1am. Attack by B & D Companies. Assembled F.13. All objectives gained. Berks on left, Queens on right, line diagonally across F.14.a. 26 prisoners captured, also a night signalling apparatus.

Mericourt 25/8/18: 2.50am - 9th R. Fusiliers attacked through us. A Coy lent to support them. No opposition encountered

3.15pm - Battn moved to F.8 near Fricourt. 35th Brigade became advanced guard to Div. H.V very active on Fricourt X roads. END
