Circumstances of Death

William is listed as dying of wounds incurred in action on 4 Jul 1917. Earlier the same day he was dangerously ill when admitted to the 22nd Casualty Clearing Station with gun shot wounds to his right side. The battalion war diary for the 3rd & 4th July 1917 is transcribed below and shows that William may have been wounded in the PM of 3 Jul 1917 by the shelling described in the diary.

Trenches at Thelus - 3 Jul 1917 - am: Sunny. Wind E.N.E 5pmh. Enemy aeroplanes flew low around our front line area & supports. They were engaged by our anti-aircraft guns mounted in support.

pm: Sunny. Wind E 3mph. Battery positions on our right again heavily shelled without effect. Battalion engaged in building support and communication trenches immediately in front of Thelus.

Trenches at Thelus - 4 Jul 1917 - am: Raining, Wind E 12mph. Battalion relieved by 15th Battn at 2.am. Bn marched off by Platoons at this hour arriving at Winnipeg Huts, Mont St. Eloy at about 5am.

pm: Raining, Wind N.E 8mph. Troops rested. END
