Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

George is listed as being killed in action on 25 March 1918 and the war diary for the 24th/25th March is transcribed, in full, below.

March 24 – Maurepas: The Brigade remained in action S of and ½ mile from Maurepas until about 10.am when the Brigade began to retire by Battery’s after all their ammunition had been expended (there was a certain amount of shelling in the vicinity). The order of retirement was C – D – B – A/108 to a position in the Carnoy valley N of Maricourt. Ammunition had just begun to arrive from the BAC when we heard that the enemy were approaching from the direction of Trone-Bernafray Woods & the Brigade was ordered to take up a position W of Maricourt-Suzanne Road.

March 25 – Maricourt – Suzanne: We remained in action W of Maricourt-Suzanne Road until 11pm. During the afternoon the position was shelled and 2/Lt Banks B/108 went and took charge of the Limber teams and got team horses clear of those killed and the teams clear of the shelled area. Sgt Hawker and Bmdr Laxton with great gallantry mended the telephone wires.

At 11pm orders were received to take up a position near the Bois-de Tailles and the Brigade got into action by about 3am on 26/3/1918. END
