Williams remains were moved to Brie Cemetery from where he was originally buried sometime after the Armastice
Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
William is listed as being killed in action on 22 Mar 1918, however this is not supported by the war diary (see below) which lists casualties for the 21st and 23rd but not the 22nd March. The war diary for all three days is transcribed below, however it the entries seem to be more administrative than an illustration of how casualties were incurred.In the Field - 1918 Mar 21: Enemy bombardment opened up at about 4.40am, Reveille ordered at once and Regiment stood to. Tertry shelled by light gun and aerodromes at Mons en Chaussee. Brigade left Demise at 4.45pm arriving at Beaumont en Beine about 10.pm where it went into bivouac. Shortly afterwards orders were received to form Dismounted Brigade under Col. Burt with Capt Miles as his 2nd in Command. The Regimental detachement was commanded by Capt W.P Browne with Lieuts Birch, Stedal, Hilton-Greene, Smith and Casey and 217 O.R. END [Casualties from above 1 killed and 1 wounded]
In the Field - 1918 Mar 22: Soon after midnight, Dismounted Brigade rode to Ungy-le-Cay where they embussed for the front, horses returned to Beaumount. The Brigade staff having left also to form staff of Dismounted Division. Major Irwin was left in charge of Brigade, details with Capt O'Callaghan as Staff Officer. Orders received to march Bde details to Pontoise which was reached about 2.0pm where we went into billets, horses in open. END [Casualties - None Listed]
In the Field - 1918 Mar 23: About 10.0am message came through from Division by telephone to say Germans had broken through at Ham and were on Ham-Esmery Hallon Road, accordingly all available men were to be mounted leaving one man to five horses in the lines; this was subsequently alterred to 50 men per unit forming a 6th Bde Squadron under Major W. Williams, X Hussars with Capt. Turner as 2nd in Command. The officers with the regimental party were Lieuts Cubitt, Cooper and Harris. They marched at 11.20am to join Col Patterson, Fort Garry Horse at Bretigny and subsequently joined Gen Harman's mounted detachment. About 3.0pm Bde details marched to Carlepont and went into bivouac. END [Casualties 7 killed and 11 wounded]
In the Field - 1918 Mar 24: Remained at Carlepont. END [Casualties 2 killed, 21 wounded and 6 missing]
