Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the 11th and 12th April 1917 the battalion were in the front lines at Monchy-le-Preux and engaged in attacking the enemy lines. At some stage Edward was killied and in a letter to his family his sergeant wrote “Ned was in a Coy & went over the Top with the 3rd wave & was hit after he left our lines. He got in pretty badly poor boy. I believe and we were hoping it was a ‘blighty’ one. But when we heard he was dead it quite turned us all up completely…He died as he lived a little hero and will always be remembered by those of us who remain’.”
