Circumstances of Death
John is listed as having died on 26 Jun 1917. The following is a precis of events taken from newspaper cuttings and his service record. On the 24th June 1917 John left his Garrison in England to travel to Malta, via Marsailles, to join his Battalion. Two days later, 26 Jun 1917, he was on a train travelling to Marsailles when was taken from the train to a hospital in Orange, France where he died the same day from a cerebral haemmorrhage which were incurred whilst aboard a troopship travelling between Marseilles and Malta. John was buried near the hospital in the Orange Communal Cemetery but on 18th April 1952 his remains were exhumed and moved to the Mazargues Military Cemetery in Marsailles. |
